The course usually 1, 2, or 3 years (dependent on student’s requirements) is designed for students who are not yet ready to leave school for a full time placement at a Further Education College or for employment. A total education and independence skills programme offers a broad and flexible framework for pro-active learning both in school and within the community. Students are encouraged to become aware of their own interests, strengths and weaknesses in relation to personal, educational and vocational aspects.
All students play a part in individual planning of their own programmes of work and activities in accordance with their statement of speech, language and communication needs. A great emphasis is put upon the growth of independence, making their own decisions and self-sufficiency within many varied and exciting opportunities for the students to experience. All students have an annual review meeting with parents and staff where targets are set for the students to achieve during the year, and to discuss individual education plans and transition plans.

The Further Education Department at Broomhill Bank School aims to provide an active learning programme in preparation for adulthood. The students’ individual timetables have a balance of academic, leisure, independence/life skills and work experience in line with the foundation learning initiative, which will develop a personalised programme towards their intended ‘destination’.
Some students will need to develop skills to cope with their own personal care, basic numeracy, literacy, social awareness, self-confidence, self-reliance and life skills. When our students leave, we hope to have prepared them for living independently, working (paid or voluntary), and being able to contribute to their community.
Pastoral care for the students is the responsibility of all teams in the Further Education Department (Teachers & Teaching Assistants), and is overseen by the Pastoral Manager. Each student is allocated a keyworker with whom they can discuss problems, plan support, monitor progress and set and review targets. A high standard of behaviour is expected of the students at all times, emphasis being upon self-discipline, with the need to accept leadership and supervision. We encourage the development of independence skills with an emphasis on self-organisation. The students are expected to develop a personal commitment to working together and respecting one another. The school rules are based on mutual respect and caring for the environment.
We operate a highly successful individualised Behaviour and work management system. Full details of the BWMS can be found in the school's Behaviour Policy
