Horticulture plays an important part in the practical work of the centre. The garden area comprises vegetable plot, flower beds, herb garden, heated greenhouses, polythene tunnels and potting shed. The students learn the basic skills required to grow plants and maintain a garden and through the mini enterprise schemes over the growing year are able to develop their key skills of numeracy, literacy and social skills through the medium of horticulture and work in the community. The business enterprise scheme covers;

The enterprise scheme has developed in order that the students may see what it means to be at work and how business works, to discover a variety of work and social skills, to work with adults outside their home and school and how they can develop and grow in confidence and self-esteem.
We grow plants in our nursery and sell them at the school to visitors and staff. We make attractive displays for school events and sell flower baskets and plants at the christmas and summer fayres.
Broomhill Butties is the name of our Sandwich shop which operates one day a week from the FED.
The aims of Broomhill Butties are:

Working in the Butties team enables the students to experience working in a 'real life' situation within the school, improve their team skills, develop a basic idea of how a business is run, improve their knowledge of healthy eating and the need for good food hygiene. It also helps to develop kitchen skills and food handling skills, increases decision making techniques, and broadens their appreciation of the range of foods available for making sandwiches. The students have the opportunity to taste new foods, improve shopping skills, and increase their social awareness as they negotiate the busy supermarket. The students in the Butties team gain a sense of pride in their work, and experience working under time pressure; the orders must be ready by lunchtime.
Each weekly session with the Butties team involves collecting orders from the Broomhill Bank staffroom, a local village school and a playgroup before buying the necessary ingredients from Sainsbury's. The students use the 'fast track' system; they scan barcodes and pack the shopping carefully as they collect the items around the store. On returning to school, the students create fresh fillings, prepare salad ingredients, and make up sandwiches to order, using a wide variety of ingredients and breads. The students are also responsible for writing labels and following a system to ensure the sandwiches are correctly labelled and delivered. At lunchtime, the students distribute the sandwiches to various locations, and once the customers have been served, the Butties students can make their own well deserved lunches.
